How To Find Keywords On A Webpage That Are Underperforming Using Google Search Console
If your page is not raking in the first page of search engine then your website would have less CTR and less organic traffic.
For example I will consider the keyword " Does Google Search Console Help SEO" that I wish to rank in the first page.
So my targeted keyword volume is around 1000 per month and your website ranks in seventh place then CTR would be around 2.16% which would give you 21 organic clicks.
If I am able to rank in second or third position for the same keyword with volume of 1000 then CTR would be around 15.46% which would result in 154 organic clicks.
So we were able to understand how even being on the first page we can receive significant more traffic with the above examples.
To find the underperforming keywords on Google Search Console:
- Go to search results under performance tab
- Click on CTR tab and Average position tab which gives clear information on keywords ranking position for your website
3. In the next step click on the pyramid icon which is just below the dates column and select the position to see the keywords ranking place on search engine
4. Now you have select the filter by position by choosing the options on the top left hand corner or below the queries and select less than 10 because any keyword ranking at tenth position will be easy to bring on top tree positions.
Once you have completed all the steps as explained in the above points you can click on position to get ascending order results. Which makes it easy to top ranking keywords if you have hundreds of them.
I would like to concentrate on keywords which are below ten positions but have a higher number of impressions because lesser impressions are not going to help us.

- Select the position column and create filter of keywords which is ranking on or less than fourth position in search engine
- Click on CTR to see position from lowest to highest
- You should be able to find the keyword with higher impressions and lesser CTRs which should be below two percent that is ranking in top fourth position
I will take an example of keyword "how google search console works"
So if we see the result for this keyword the first position is occupied by a featured snippet followed by people also ask for (which is questions) then YouTube video carousel.
From the above image you can observe that the top two results are occupied by the featured snippet and People Also Ask at top zero levels. So technically the top three results are already occupied with these new features.
What is A Featured Snippet On Google
A featured snippet is often or historically known as a quick answer box so most people are getting results through these features without going to other results in the first page of seo.
Proportionately more views are taken by these featured snippets.
First kind of featured snippet are paragraphs that would answer with a single sentence for the search query.
Second one is a list based featured snippet which is normally meant for how to base query with 4-5 points answer with an image.
The third kind is a table featuring snippet which shows different data points and followed with a YouTube video which starts with a certain time so the people can directly get the answer to their queries.
Also the algorithm is getting ready for voice based search with answers on pronunciation of the topic so just observe below image where I typed console and the result was an voice based snippet and then followed with the website on this topic.
I hope you understood the importance of these featured snippets which are shown in different forms and are evolving for future search queries. So it is the right time that we should start optimizing our content to these features and attract more traffic.

First search for the query on Google Search and observe what kind of snippet is shown on the zero level.
Then create the heading in <h2> or <h3> tags and directly include the answer below the heading so that it becomes easy for search engines to collect the information from your website and make it available as the new featured snippet.
Answers to the search query should be enclosed in paragraph tags and contain 54 - 58 words.
List and table snippet should also be formatted with proper tags and include priming phrases such as "here are", "follow these steps" and "start with"
Once you are done with the above steps, check back after a few days whether your content is appearing as featured snippet and keep aligned with Google search intent because at the end this is what matters to show your content as featured snippet.
As per my research featured snippets were shown from top ranking and high authority websites but there is scope for new websites which is considered by search algorithm so you have to plan the less difficult keyword before publishing your article.
Check For Sitemap Errors, Warnings And Exclusions Using Google Search Console
Sitemaps are data files which indicate search engines that important pages on your website should be crawled and indexed and help crawl efficiently.
So if you have problems on your sitemap then it is a bad indication to search engine which will avoid indexing your pages so go to the sitemap report on your search console.
Observe the below image where you can see that status is showing success. So check the status of your submitted sitemap.
Check for these four tabs which show errors, valid with warnings, valid and excluded.
So my website does not have any warnings or errors but if you find any such errors you can further analyse them with the help of the search console fix them immediately because these are the one holding your website to rank on top of search engine.

Login to your Search Console account and click on links on bottom left hand corner
Once you click on link you will see three different tabs like external links, Internal links and top linking sites.
From the external links tab you can see that your websites are linking to or you website is referring to.
Top linking sites provides details like where your website is receiving links with details
Internal links provide information on every single article that is been linked with another article from your website.
You can filter our internal links from ascending order to see which pages have less number of links so you have decide whether you have linked to the right pages on your website if not then you can change the link to article which is close match to that one.
So if an older article is passing no link or other similar topics then you can reset them which will help search engine index and top rank your new pages.
If you have more pages on your website which makes it difficult to understand similar topics then you can follow the next steps.
Go to Google search and use this search operator ( I will be using example of my website)
From the above search query we can see the posts which contain these keywords and you can start linking each other to help google bot to index and rank your pages fast.
How many internal links can you have on your page?
From the above image you can understand that Brian Dean from Backlinko confirms that having 100 internal links is not worth for any page.
So it is better to have fewer links and personally I would like to have created less than five internal links on my posts.
